Christian Pérès Gibaut: The artist of this unique pop-up show notes common elements of his paintings include a sense of loss and a search for beauty amid imperfection.
“Who knows why memory chooses to bring back certain images over others?” he asks. “The canvas is a building material, made of pieces that I sew together after they were ripped apart, making the stitches, the holes, the failed attempts, the places where the fabric is worn out, visible. I use the canvas as a testimony of time, and the scars it leaves behind.”
This meshes with his personal story. As Gibaut explains, “As a newcomer, I came to learn that some cultural references are untranslatable, certain experiences can only be fully grasped when one has been immersed in the particular culture that gave birth to that experience. Nothing is obvious when you leave your country to move to an unknown place. One’s personal situation is mostly uncertain.”

Possessor (2019): Just an amazing film by Brandon Cronenberg, this one’s really worth seeing in person in the theatre.
Set in an slightly adjacent world to our own, Tasya Vos (Andrea Riseborough) is a corporate agent who uses brain-implant technology to inhabit other people’s bodies, driving them to commit assassinations for the benefit of the company. While she has a special gift for the work, her experiences on these jobs have caused a dramatic change in her, and in her own life, as she struggles to suppress violent memories and urges.
As her mental strain intensifies, she begins to lose control, and soon she finds herself trapped in the mind of a man (Christopher Abbott) whose identity threatens to obliterate her own. Gruesome, gory, and thought-provoking, the film follows in the tradition of Brandon Cronenberg’s incomparable father David.
